Center for Interactive Learning, Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio · Many technically sophisticated teaching spaces are sandwiched into this state-of-the-art building. A four-story atrium provides the central circulation and links to other campus buildings. The Forum is a semi-circular, tiered, high-end lecture and presentation space. There are also high tech classrooms, teaching laboratories, lecture halls, and a recording studio complex. Ostergaard Acoustical Associates collaborated with the architects and engineers to develop solutions for the unique acoustical needs of each space type.

Connelly Center Renovation, Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania · This interior renovation of the student union included the Villanova Room, the University's largest multi-purpose space, and a cinema. Services were provided to achieve optimum acoustics for program intelligibility, through finish selection and placement, and by correcting HVAC noise problems. Other student union projects include renovation at the main campus facility of Rutgers and a new student union for the Cook College Campus of Rutgers.

Molecular Modeling Seminar Room, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania · Optimum acoustics are provided in this high end, fixed seating seminar and presentation room. Methods were identified to: promote clear speech interaction, control intrusive noise from other areas of this existing building and from exterior traffic noise, provide excellent sound system coverage, and control the noise of the new HVAC system.

College Hall Restoration, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

College Hall Restoration, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania · College Hall is the first building on the University of Pennsylvania campus. This consultation involved a major renovation/restoration of the grandest space in College Hall, Room 200, a two-story gothic vaulted room with stained glass windows. The program called for complete restoration while providing a new multi-media environment with excellent acoustics to serve many uses, including lectures and banquets. OAA developed architecturally appropriate details for integrating reverberation control finishes, noise control solutions for the new HVAC system, sound isolating methods for the new mechanical equipment room, and a new sound system with concealed loudspeakers.

College Hall, University of Pennsylvania

Center for Arts, Science, and Technology, Clinton Community College, Plattsburg, NY · The Center features Electrical Technology and Industrial Technology state-of-the-art science laboratories, computer enhanced "smart" classrooms, modern photography labs and art studios, and a 170-seat theatre. OAA worked closely with the architects and engineers to integrate solutions for room acoustics, sound isolating constructions, sound systems, and HVAC system noise and vibration control.

New Law School Commons, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia

New Law School Commons, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia · Ostergaard Acoustical Associates is frequently asked to consult on the acoustics of atrium-like spaces. These are unusual spaces that, in the absence of acoustical engineering, often have the look of the outdoors and the sound of a steel industrial building. In this case, the University had previous atrium reverberation problems and expressed concern that our acoustical experience be included. Our analysis of The Commons determined the extent of sound absorption needed for acoustical comfort, identified candidate materials compatible with the architectural concept, and recommended correct quantities and locations for optimum acoustical effect.

A similar project is the glass-enclosed courtyard for Harvard Medical School. It is normally used as a lounge and circulation space, but also serves as a large meeting space and an area for receptions. For the medical school atrium, we designed a distributed sound system as well as consulting on reverberation and HVAC noise control. Other law school projects include the University of Alabama and Rutgers University.

Law School Commons, University of Virginia

Center for Chemical Research, Columbia University, New York, New York · This is a major renovation of one of the original McKim Mead and White campus buildings into a modern chemical research facility. Services included the design of interior acoustics of the lecture halls, sound isolating construction, and noise and vibration control for the extensive new air handling system. Measures were also identified to allow rooftop equipment noise emissions to comply with NYC code limits.

Music Department Addition, County College of Morris, Randolph, New Jersey · The major acoustical design challenge for this addition was the location of a new jazz ensemble rehearsal/performance space directly over a large lecture hall. OAA was able to identify the sophisticated constructions and detailing necessary to assure that performances would not be audible in the lecture hall. Room acoustical design, sound isolating construction design, and HVAC noise control recommendations were provided for the many space types in this renovation.

Acoustical Renovation, The Pavilion, Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania

Acoustical Renovation, The Pavilion, Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania · The Pavilion is Villanova's largest spectator facility with 6500 seats. In addition to basketball games, it is used for graduation, special Masses, and pop concerts. Despite the installation of a new state-of-the-art sound system, program sound was not clear because of excessive reverberation. OAA carried out comprehensive acoustical testing and an acoustical analysis to determine the quality and placement of candidate materials for controlling the reverberation. Following implementation and confirming acoustical measurements, it is now feasible to have all of the desired programs supported by clear, intelligible sound.

The Pavilion, Villanova University

Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York · Ostergaard Acoustical Associates carried out two feasibility studies for the Eastman School of Music commissioned by SWBR Architects. The first included evaluating candidate locations and characteristics for an orchestra rehearsal room to reduce the demand on the Eastman Theater stage as rehearsal space. The second evaluated and provided preliminary recommendations for conversion of an adjacent 1920 office building for use by the school's community education program.

Renovation of Law School, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia · An existing area of the Law School was gut-renovated to create two high-end lecture halls with support spaces. Ostergaard Acoustical Associates' recommendations included the room acoustical design, recommendations for sound isolating construction, and HVAC noise and vibration control based on full system modeling.
